About the Music Director, Conductor

Maestra Oxalis-Anh Nguyen began her musical training at the age of two in the Suzuki violin program at her mother’s alma mater. She later received additional training at the Akademia Muzyczna w Krakowie, where she studied violin performance. She further advanced her music education at The Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, Hungary, where her main focus was the 18th and 19th century symphonic literature.

Maestra Nguyen has participated in workshops and master classes at Copenhagen, Denmark-Mozart’s Festival (violin), The Krakow, Poland-Academy of Music Festival (harmony, counterpoint, violin); Poznan, Poland-Wieniawski’s Festival (violin); Interlochen National Music Camp (violin); The Czech International Workshop for Conductors; Kiev, Ukraine-International Institute for conductors; Prague, Czech Republic-Gustave Meir Master Class; Varna, Bulgaria-Institute for conductors; Lutoslawski's Competition of Young Conductors in Bialystok, the Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors. Experienced with a broad spectrum of the 18th to 21st century repertoire in symphonic, opera, chamber and choral works, Maestra Nguyen is adroit in creating original programs which are engaging for audiences and orchestras alike. Nguyen is a living example of her belief. She divides her time between the United States and Europe, determined in her mission to find innovative ways to make the arts an essential part of the lives of people on both continents. As a cultural ambassador, she has collaborated with various Doctor’s Symphonies in organizing benefit concerts in chamber music duet, trio, quartet and quintet. She has presided over Young Artist’s Concerto/Aria Competition, which gives the opportunity for young musicians to present concerto with the ensemble. Nguyen also has a passion for arts-in-medicine and art education, and has worked with a variety of groups including schools, education agencies, mental institutions, hospitals, and arts/cultural organizations. Her passions have led to many pilot Suzuki violin programs, art/music therapy programs, and cultural exchange projects. Most recent is the Suzuki violin pilot program, Capital City Violin Studio.

About the orchestra

The Sacramento Doctors Symphony Orchestra (SDSY) is a community orchestra consisting of professional and amateur musicians. We perform orchestral repertoire of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The SDSY membership embraces an array of talents and professions, all contributing in very unique and special ways to our objective of providing beautiful music to the public.

Collectively, the SDSY’s musicians consist of more than 80 nationalities, and come from myriad walks of life. Our members span the entire community - physicians, medical students, dentists, nurses, physical therapists, chiropractors, other allied health professions, homemakers, and educators. The typical SDSYer is accessible and unpretentious, and enjoys the camaraderie and the pleasures of sharing this wonderful and enriching experience with each other. The benefits of playing music together and their contribution to our mental and emotional prosperity are immeasurable. We learn from each other's perspectives, appreciate our interdependence, and work together on our common interests and goals. The SDSY is one of the best examples of the solidarity of the medical fraternity.

Though our symphony is made up of players at various skill levels, musicians in the back seats of the string sections typically have impressive concertos like Sibelius or Saint-Saens in their repertoire. The SDSY has high expectations for its musicians and due to the caliber of chosen symphonic literatures, members are strongly encouraged to come prepared to rehearsals. We rehearse every Saturday morning from 9:30-11:30, except for holidays. We cordially invite serious adult musicians to consider joining the SDSY by completing the Application and attaching their resumes. Our members pay membership fees, and cover their orchestral-related costs such as travel and accommodation. Membership is open to all local, national, and international musicians and is determined by audition or prior arrangement with the conductor.

Our year culminates with the International Gala Benefit Concert performed in an appointed US city. The purpose of the Gala Benefit Concert and VIP event is to raise funds for selected medical charities. These funds will be allocated to charities selected and approved by the SDSY Board of Directors.

In preparation for the annual benefit concert, our international member delegates will receive Benefit Concert Packages (BCPs) which contain instructional tools, applications, and guidance for practicing parts of scores to illustrate important sections and features. Upon arrival to the States, our international member delegates will then join their local counterparts for what is expected to be an intensive three-day rehearsal culminating with the Gala Benefit Concert. The Benefit Concert will showcase selections of the most beloved orchestral excerpts and interludes by Puccini, Strauss, Bizet, Mascagni and many more. Also included will be popular soprano arias in the Italian and French repertory, including the breathtaking "Un bel dì vedremo" from Madama Butterfly, "Regnava nel silenzio" from Lucia di Lammermoor, and "Una furtiva lagrima" from L'elisir d'amore.

Excursions and trips will be scheduled after the benefit concert to allow musicians to experience the culture and customs of the US.

Since our inception, over 250 members from the different US states and abroad have registered on our roster. We expect the roster to continue to grow as more individuals are informed about us, mainly by personal referrals. Our international member delegates represent every discipline in the field of medical sciences, including medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, medical biology, pharmacology and every level of experience and training. Most of our international musicians are from Europe and Asia and are former music students and conservatoire-trained. Most are currently playing in other Doctor’s Symphonies in their own countries. We are expecting approximately 70 members to participate at this time.

As plans are made for the annual International Gala Benefit Concert in 2009, we will keep you informed. Please check back with us later for more information. The Benefit Concert should prove to be very exciting for all. All seven continents are represented in our orchestra, and members reflect the multicultural mix of our world.
