Frequently asked Questions

What are some of the benefits music therapy brings?
Music is a universal language and most anyone with a disability can benefit from music therapy. Clients participate through learning how to play a musical instrument through improvising and making up new songs and through singing, or even just listening. It has been proven that music therapy greatly impacts the quality of life. Some of the many benefits of music therapy are:

  • Raises blood levels of an immune system fighter
  • Stimulates neural connections in the brain and promotes spatial ability and memory in children
  • Improves memory recall which contributes to reminiscence and satisfaction with life
  • Lowers blood pressure, decreases heart rate, improves cardiac output
  • Provides emotional comfort and relief from anxiety, lowers stress hormone
  • Increases endorphins, the body’s natural opiates or feel-good drugs
  • Brings positive changes in mood and emotional states

Do clients need to learn to play a musical instrument?
While not a principal focus of our music therapy sessions, clients often acquire musical skills during the course of their sessions. Skills are a vehicle for expression and relationship. Our mission is to assist our clients’ capacity to progress in their developmental path, to express themselves, and to form purposeful relationships in life.

What types of clients do you work with?
Our music therapists work with a wide variety of people. Some examples include the mentally ill, the physically handicapped, the elderly (including those suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia), the terminally ill and the traumatically brain injured.

Where do your music therapists work?
Currently, our music therapists work mostly in local nursing facilities, hospices, and treatment centers.

How are music therapy services given?
The Symphonic Music Therapists use various methods such as strumming the guitar, music experimentation at the piano, playing percussion instruments, moving to music, drawing to music, music CDs, and last but not least, music listening and singing. Since music therapy is also used as a socialization mechanism, the entire family often joins in with the therapy to create a more enjoyable environment.

What can I expect from music therapists? The Symphonic Music Therapists are trained with a wide range of abilities to use clinical musical interventions to address the emotional, communication, sensory-motor, and cognitive needs of clients. Symphonic Art Therapy

The SDSY has been working in cooperation with its community to improve the quality of healing in hospitals and clinics. The Symphonic Art Therapy Program is a result of these efforts. This program cultivates the philosophy that art creation fosters the healing process. In a protected artistic environment, clients are encouraged and supported to recover themselves through art therapy sessions. The program uses the visual arts to amplify and improve the lives of clients. Through art, we hope to inspire clients to reach beyond their limitations and to discover their own inner thoughts. Our goal for clients is not to produce artistic masterpieces, but to understand their emotional experiences by fully utilizing a broad spectrum of expressions. Our emphasis is on the art itself and not words because we believe that art presents an uncontaminated and unrestricted opportunity for illuminating one’s inner thoughts.

We are committed to:

·Provide clients artistic tools and means of expression
· Help clients acquire a sense of control
· Relieve clients’ treatment anxieties
· Provide positive experiences for clients to anticipate on return visits to the hospital
· Relieve clients’ emotional conflicts by helping them express feelings about emotional and physical trauma
· Provide focus and help clients with mental illness find inner peace
· Help clients collaborate and improve their self-confidence
· Foster self-awareness and personal growth

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the different services that you have?
Off-Site Services: We will send an Art Therapist off-site to provide services upon request (individually or in groups) by a wide range of institutions. This has proven especially advantageous for agencies interested in broadening their existing programs for the physically challenged or feeble elders and for those who cannot participate in programs outside their facilities.

Contracted Services:
The Symphonic Art Therapy Studio also contracts with organizations such as psychiatric hospitals, community mental health settings, correctional programs, senior centers, nursing homes, and group homes. This also has proven conducive to frail elders and physically challenged clients who cannot engage in programs away from their facilities.

What does art therapy involve?
Clients involved in art therapy receive the tools they need to produce paintings, drawings, photography, and many other types of artwork. Art therapists work with patients individually or in groups depending on the individual.

What can I expect from the Symphonic Art Therapists?
The Symphonic Art Therapists are professionals, trained in both art and therapy. All have Master’s degrees in art therapy, or a related field with additional coursework in art therapy. They are registered as Art Therapists (ATR) and some are Board Certified (ATR-BC). They are skilled in the application of a variety of art modalities, such as drawing, painting, clay, and other mediums, for treatment and assessment. Our Art Therapists will help clients express themselves through their art and discuss their emotions and concerns as they relate to their creation. In another method of art therapy, clients may be shown items of art or photographs, and then asked to discuss with a therapist what they have seen.

The Symphonic Art Therapists will follow the steps below to create a unique therapy plan according to clients’ special needs.

1. Assessment
2. Goal Development
3. Modality Selection
4. Relationship Bonding
5. Self-Awareness and Empowerment
6. Strategic Applications
7. Culmination and Assessment

Are there any possible problems or complications?
Art therapy is considered innocuous when conducted by skilled therapists such as ours. Feelings of distress may stir up at times, but this is a designed part of the mending process.

Important: Depending on art therapy treatment alone as well as abstaining or prolonging standard medical care may have serious health consequences.

What kinds of materials might I use in a session?
Our Art Therapist will guide you through the activity and will assist you in choosing materials that are most appropriate for you. Working materials may include a photograph from home, clay, paint, collage, and drawing materials like pastels or pencils, and finger-paints.

What are your fees?
We have affordable sliding-scale fees that accommodates the cost of all art materials used during the session.

How much do sessions cost?
In-home sessions are provided at $90 per hour. The rate for off-site sessions is determined by various factors. We also see clients through contractual agreements with many facilities throughout the Sacramento area. The rates at host facilities are predetermined prior to the start of services. Please do not hesitate to inform your administrators and/or case workers about our services—they may be inspired to bring The Symphonic Art Therapists to their facilities. Those who need financial assistance are encouraged to apply for our financial aid.

Will my medical insurance cover for these services?
We will be happy to provide you with a coded invoice that you can present to your insurance company, but ultimately you are responsible for paying for the services in full each month. The insurance company will reimburse you once they receive and approve the required documentation from you. Please call your insurance company and obtain pre-approval for the service before commencing therapy.

How do we get started?
The Symphonic Art Therapy embraces individuals from all cultures, ethnicities, backgrounds, sexual orientations, religions, and ages. We strive to offer culturally sensitive therapy to all clients. To discuss or to schedule a trial art therapy session for you or a facility, please call The Symphonic Art Therapy Studio at (916) 638-2304. Our case coordinators will walk you through this easy process.

Symphonic Medic Art Program

Symphonic Medic Art Program (SMAP) provides the opportunity for patients and hospital staff to interact with their environment in a meaningful and creative way, to promote control and a sense of purpose by engaging patients and hospital staff in painting activities as part of the healing process. Bringing color and life to the hospital can reduce patient’s stress, create a sense of security, and perpetuate an image of excellence for the hospital.

The Symphony has been working in cooperation with physicians, businesses, art organizations, artists, patients, and their families to improve the quality of healing by filling hospitals with color, and exuberance. In an effort to enhance medical education and improve doctor-patient relationships, medical students at selected medical schools now also have an opportunity to develop their skills interacting with patients through an elective that brings the arts to patients. SMAP addresses one of the most crucial and often neglected skills for a physician, the ability to make a human connection with patients. SMAP is run by a Board of Trustees who include representatives of the local health and arts communities as well as international ambassadors.

Vision

The Symphonic Medic Art Program (SMAP) wishes to continue to use art projects to develop the ties between the health services and the community at large. In the longer term, we would like to be able to administer workshop space within hospitals for the use of visiting artists.

To Begin: If you are interested in partnering with SMAP for future projects, please complete and submit the SMAP Request Form and Dr. Ewa Hasiec, our SMAP Director will contact you to provide you with more information.

To Host a SMAP

Please complete and submit the SMAP Request Form and Dr. Ewa Hasiec, our SMAP Director will contact you to provide you with sponsorship and hosting information.

SMAP will also assist you to plan the logistics of the SMAP, such as determining the paint station locations within the hospitals and determining the number of tables that will be needed, etc. Our artists prepare the pre-drawn, pre-coded canvases and art supplies ahead of time in our studio and then ship them to you. Everyone is invited to participate in the SMAP including patients, families, hospital staff, and community volunteers. We will either arrange to be present at the appointed location to orchestrate and event for you, or will provide instructions so that you can conduct the project on your own.
